Hello. I just read the post before this one. My surname is Lowery and we always thought the name was Irish. If anyone does have any details then it would be nice to hear from them

I would like to ask about "Lowery" (I have looked at so many spellings) I have been looking at that name for about a month now, as I have a 2-great grandfather, (last name Ungry) who I am looking for his mother's name, who was a Lowery, again unsure of the spelling... so I just use "Lowery."

Here is the basics of my story, Ellra Ungry, my 2 great grandfather was born in 1861 in Three Rivers, St. Joseph County, Michigan. When he was just a year old, his father Daniel Ungry was killed in the war. Which made him an only child. Ellra's mother, and her parents, (The Lowery's) left home and traveled through Missouri, and into Kansas. Some where along the way, Ellra's mother died. It seems like I might never find out who they were as there is no help on his birth record, and with out any first names for his grandparents to follow, and no census records show him on them.

I really found him when he is older and married, in Coffey County Kansas, 1900 census, and he moved around a lot after that.

My main intrest now is to find out who was his mother and grandparents, and to find out more about his childhood. So I have been just looking at a lot of Lowery info, till I find him.

I can only assume that his grand parents died in Kansas somewhere, but I also assume that they didn't go there on a whim, I think they must have had family there.

I hope some one here knows what I need, this seems to be a well used site. I hope I am a Loughrey.

I wanted to update my previous post. My mother recently passed away without finding any information about her biological relatives. In going through her paperwork we discovered Mom's original birth certificate, which reads: Father, Charles Laughrey - Mother, Dorothy Disbro; my mother's birth name was: Thelma Jean Laughrey (but was changed to Ruth Ellen Huslberg when she was adopted.) We found references to Charles Laughrey in other documents and his name is spelled 3 different ways: Lauthrey, Laughry, and Lauthrie. There is also mention of a Bulah Lauthrie. We believe that originally both the Lauthrey and Disbro families lived in southern Michigan, in the Bronson/Coldwater area. Any information would be helpful as we try to piece together this puzzle. My 76 year-old mother's birthfather was named: Charles Lauthrey (she's not 100% sure of the spelling) and her birthmother's name was Dorothy Disbro. My mother was adopted by Dorothy's cousin. My mother believes that Charles lived in Michigan perhaps Bronson, Coldwater, Sturgis area) at the time. She never had any contact with him but often wonders if he'd still be alive and if she have any half-brothers and sisters. If anyone has any clues She'd be delighted! Thank-you. :-)

My grandmother's name was Georgia Laughary and her father was Robert Lee Laughary. According to my aunt, Robert had no brothers or sisters that she knew of. The Laughary family was also related to the Crowleys of Webster County, Ky. Robert Lee married a Minnie Ann Fraiser, and their children were: George Ann, Lawrence Edmon,Clara Corrine,Gury Lofton, Bertha May,Homer Hiland. I'm searching for connections to the family of William Loughrey of Balteagh in Derry,Ireland. He died in 1863 at age 85. Hi, I am trying to find Loughrey relatives in US. i am from Australia. My Grandmothers father and uncle were James Vincent and Edward Andrew Loughrey they were born in 1863 & 1882 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. They came to Australia - they were both Locomotive Engineers and brought the first steam trains to Australia. they married 2 sisters here, one called emma, not sure of the others name. they met them as emma's brother was also a train engineer. My great-great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Loughrey, born 14 Jun 1849 in Licking County, Ohio, daughter of William Loughrey and Mary (?), both born around 1825 in Ohio. I think Mary could be the daugher of Edward Loughrey b. 20 Nov 1791 in Pennsylvania, and Elizabeth Green, also born 1791 in Pennsylvania. Possible siblings would be David, Hiram, Barbara and Francis. Hello it's me again shandrice. I'm looking for my grandmother once again. She had two mixeed children and she gave them up and got married and had six more kids and she's irish and that's all i know. I would like to meet her to ask her why she gave up her children. She choose to give them life so why do that and then leave them abandoned in their cribs. Patrick Laughrea is my third great-grandfather. Mary Patton is the wife of my third great-grandfather.

I have significant information, with which you are seeking, concerning Bridget Laughrea (Laughry, Loughry, Loghry, Laughrey, etc).

Bridget was married to my second-great-grandfather, (John) Owen Boyce and they are both buried in the St Elzear Cemetery, Beauce County, Province of Quebec, Canada.

Hello! I see that there are some distant relatives on here :o) My great-grandmother was Etta Beatrice (Loughry)Kelly; her father was John Wesley Loughry; his father was Aaron Loughry Jr; his father was Aaron Loughry Sr; his father was Patrick Loughry; his father was John Loughry (Lochrea); his father was Jeremiah Loughry. The information I have states that Jeremiah came was born somewhere around 1700 in North Ireland and was married to a Mary Murphy (Murphee?). My family ended up in Tucker Co and Preston Co WV. I would love to hear from any relatives and anyone having more information about where exactly Jeremiah came from! My husband and I just went to Ireland this past September and absolutely loved it! My g grandfather was Thomas Loughrey from Dublin. He married Mary Newel who came from Philipstown in Co Offaly. I think Thomas was born about 1860. They had 8 children but I can only trace 6. As I get older, I find the need/desire to look more into my past. My aunts and grandparents started an intense geneology gathering mission in the past years, but it wasn't until I just lost my grandmother and my grandfather getting poorer health that I feel I should have searched earlier. I am trying to take my Loughery family history back past my Philadelphia born grandfather (moved to Boston) James Joseph Loughery. He married Jessie Ramsey, also of Philadelphia. Her father, Bill Ramsey was a soldier in the Civil War. I know James Joseph Loughery's family came from Ireland and I would like to know more. James and Jessie had four children, Dorothy, Agnes, James Jr. (my father) and Anna, all in the Boston area. I see many variations on the spelling, but my own father insisted on the e r y ending. Once, while vvisiting Ireland, an old gentleman told me that all Lougherys with that spelling came originally from Scotland. Might or might not be true. Any connections out there?

I would also like to hear from the descendants of the sisters of James Loughery (b. 1821 or 1826; d.1889--see the entry following this one in space). They are Bridget (about 1824), Mary (about 1830-1833), Catharine (about 1833), Ann (1844), Margaret (1859), Helen (Elinor) (1863) and Eliza (Liza) (1869). Margaret, Helen and Eliza are half-sisters. Bridget married John (or Owen) Boyce on April 26 1842 in St-Sylvestre, Québec. Mary married Lewis Levis Cowan on May 20 1851 in St-Elzéar, Québec. Catharine married Thomas McGee on Nov. 6 1855 in St-Elzéar, Québec. Ann married James Gould on July 26 1870 in St-Sylvestre, Québec. Helen (Elinor) married James Monaghan on Coct. 25 1887 in St-Séverin, Québec. As far as we know, these sisters wrote their maiden name as either Laughry, Loughry, Laughrey, or Laughery, i.e. differently from their brothers Owen (Loughrea), Bernard (Laughrea) and James (Loughery on the tombstone).

Regarding the 9 children of Bernard Laughrea, we would like to hear from the descendants of Mary (1864) and Michael (1866). Mary maried a Kellow. Michael married Elizabeth Castillo and had 7 children. We don't really know if they spelled their names Laughrea or not. We have a reasonbly good idea of the whereabouts of the descendants of the other children of Bernard.

As far as we know all Laughreas in the world are descendants of Bernard Laughrea, via my grand-father John, forefather of most Canadian Laughreas and my grand-uncle James, forefather of most American Laughreas.

In summary, Patrick Loughry (1801-1886) had 9 boys and 6 girls. His son James (1821 or 1826-1889) had 4 boys and 4 girls; his daughter Mary had 2 boys and 1 girl; his son Owen had 5 boys and 1 girl; his daughter Catherine had 10 children; his son Bernard (1834-1914) had 6 boys and 3 girls. Unfortunately, we don't know how many children were produced by the 11 other sons and daughters of Patrick (1801-1886). He had 36 grand-children from 4 of his 15 children. It is therefore plausible that our ancestor Patrick (1801-1886) had about 100 grand-children by 1920, and a vast number of grand-grand-children!

I would like to hear from descendants of James Loughery (1821 or 1826) and Anne (Nancy)Gallagher. They were married in 1848 in St-Sylvestre Quebec. They had 4 sons: James (1852), Patrick (1855), Michael (1860) and John (1865); and they had 4 daughters: Mary (1850), Anne (1857), Susan (1862), and Bridget (1868). James Loughery is buried in St-Matthews Catholic Cemetery, Dalton Road/route 142, just outside of Whitefield, N.H. He was buried on Dec 9 1889 at age 68, or 63. His daughter Bridget, married to Thomas Mulhebin, is buried next to him. She died Dec 6 1990.
James (1821 or 1826) Loughery is the son of Patrick Loughry (1801) and Mary Patton, who arrived in Québec before 1833 (probably around 1832). He is the brother of Bernard Laughrea, my great-grand father, and the brother of Owen Loughrea, the great-grand father of Michael 0. Loughrea, Vietnam war hero, of Topeka, Kansas.

Owen Loughrea married Margaret Mullavey. They had 3 sons: Patrick (1858), Edward (1860) and John (1860). Owen later remarried with an Ann in 1871 and had Daniel (1872).

We would also like to hear from descendants of the other brothers of Bernard, namely: Patrick (1846), Peter (1861), Joseph (1864) and Frank (1869). Note that Peter, Joseph and Frank are the outcome of the second marriage of Patrick (1801) with Mary McGown Mahoney, which happened in 1858, the same year his son Bernard got married!

To come back to James Loughery buried in Whitefield, his son Michael (1860) married Lizzie Longway on Sept. 21 1890 in Bartlett N.H., near Whitefield.

There is a Peter Loughery buried in July 1941 in Whitefield. Maybe he is Peter (1861), the half-brother of James (1821 or 1826). Peter (1861) had a daughter Annie (1899) and maybe a son Frank.

This completes and corrects a previous posting made on June 16 2005.

My great, great grandmother was Mary E. Loughery born in Unionville, CT on January 27, 1859. She was the daughter of Patrick Loughery born in Co. Galway, Ireland in 1835 and Bridget McMahon born in Feakle, Co. Clare in 1836.

Both Patrick & Edward served in the Civil War on the Union side. Patrick rode with the 21st NY Cavalry into the Shenandoah Valley campaign until being captured by the Confederates on December 6, 1864. After being paroled in a prisoner exchange on Feb 17, 1865, Patrick fell from a train and had his right arm crushed by the cars. This arm was amputated 2 inches beneath the shoulder. On his way home from the St. Patrick's celebrations at a saloon in Unionville on March 18, 1868, he fell into the Unionville Canal and was drowned. On March 1, 1870, his widow married Michael Heafy.

I am a great great grandson of Joseph B. Loghry. I am searching for info on Kitty Loghry daughter of Joseph B. I think I found her in South Dakota 1900 census. She is married to a S.G. Chase ( Sherman Grant Chase), living at Swan Lake, Turner County, S. Dak. according to the census they have been married 6 yrs and Kitty has no children. The 2 children shown Mable age 11 and Ira age 9 must be Shermans from a previous marriage. Also the next farm listed has Nathan and Minnie (loghry) Verley living there. Minnie is Kitties sister. Then in 1908 I find S.G Chase marring a Etha Selleg in Parker, Turner County. 1910 census shows Sherman G. Chase married to Ethel E. living in Hurley, Turner Co. S. Dak. next farms on same shows Nathan and Minnie Verley again and also Mark H Loghry and wife Jennie ( who is Kitties brother) The daughter who is mentioned here Hazel L Chase must be Kitties daughter, age 9. Then in South Dakota Births I find a Mark Almon Chase b. June 30, 1902 in Turner County, S. Dak., father Sherman G. Chase, Mother Kitty Orvis ??? state file # 759235, date filed June 5, 1954. As we all know Orvis was Kittys mothers remarried name after Joseph B. Loghry died. Many family members have Kitty married to a Sherman William Chase from Michigan. also have found her listed in one tree as Kitty VanHouten married to Sherman Grant Chase. Does anyone out there know what her real name was? and what happen to her. Yes my comment that I would like to make is that I am half black, half Irish and Portuguese. My grandmother was a Loughrey who abandoned her Portuguese children (Darlene Loughrey, Patricia Loughrey) when they were babies because her newly found husband at the time said that he didn't want anything to do with any colored babies. I was just trying to learn more about my history. I am 24 years old and I have never met the Irish side of my family. Came across you page looking for some info on one of my ancestors. A couple places on your site I see mention of a Col. Archibald Loughrey who was killed a Loughrey Creek in 1781. Thought I would offer a correction to this reference.

The Colonel's surname is actually Lochry, not Loughrey, as detailed in the Pennsylvania Archives and several other historical references. The creek named after him to commemorate the famous battle, is in fact a mis-spelling made at the time the creek was named in his memory, decades after the battle.

A sampling of history on the expedition can be found in:
Edgar J. Pershing, "Lost Battalion of the Revolutionary War, PA.," National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol XVI, No. 3, Dr. G. M. Brumbaugh, editor, (Washington D.C.: National Genealogical Society, Sept., 1928), 44-51. Describes Lochry's Expedition in detail. Includes a history of the expedition, transcripts of communiques between Colonel Archibald Lochry and General George Rogers Clark, and a list of killed and captured. Also details Mathias Fisher's role in the expedition and credits him with bringing the fate of the expedition back to Pennsylvania.

Chris McHenry, The Best Men of Westmoreland, An Historical Account of the Lochry Expedition, (Lawrenceburg, Indiana: publisher unkown, 1981). Includes a lengthy narrative of Westmoreland history leading to Lochry's Expedition. My Grandfather Perry Cother Loughrey 1884-1966 his first wife is unknown to me, however they had a son Maynard and a daughter Irene.
His second wife was my Grandmother, Mable Josephine Melaas. Their children are: Kenneth, Mary, Roland, June, Margurite, John, Donald, Gaylord and
my Father Robert E. Lee Loughrey, married to my Mother, Betty Mae Sampson.
My Brother is Robert George Loughrey. He has a Daughter, Bonnie Jean Hilpisch.
I am Janis Marie Loughrey married to my first husband Alfred Preston Staats. We have a Son Christopher Preston Staats married to Kristen Louise. They have a Son Ryan Preston and a daughter Breanna Marie. Kristin also has a Son, Justyn and a Daughter Stephanie.

My Grandfather was William Edward Loughrey, married to Mrytle Odell, Norwich, NY. There was Uncle Pat & Uncle Mike born in Ireland. Aunt Bertha born in Ireland & Aunt Nel born in NY. My grandparents had 5 children, Lynn, Edward, Nora and Lora. My father Patrick James who married Katherine Marie Georgi in Liberty, NY, 1940. They had 6 children. William Henry who married Sandra Thompson, their children William, John, Wendy, Jeff, Jim, all live in Arizona. Katherine Patricia who married John Hassett, their children, Katherin & John, all live in Arizona. Marie Eileen who married John Flannigan, their children John & Jacqueline and adopted Shawn, living in Kansas, Texas and Korea. John Sr. is life Army, John Jr. also is in the Army. June Anne married Jack Hayes Jr., daughters Katrina & Abbe, live in Arizona and California. Janet Elaine married to John Hartle, sons Troy & Glenn, live in Arizona. Gale Sue living in Arizona. My Uncle Ed was in the Army in WWII, but that's all I know. I know we still have family lviing in Ireland or England, named Mary Walsh who lived in near Loughrey, Ireland. I would like to hear from descendants of James Loughrey (1826) and Anne (Nancy)Gallaghere. They were married in 1848 in St-Sylvestre Quebec. They had 4 sons: James (1852), Patrick (1855), Michael (1860) and John (1865). James (1826) is the son of Patrick Loughrey and Mary Patton. He is the brother of Bernard, my great-grand father.
WE would also like to hear from descendants of Owen Loughrey (Loughrea, Loughry) and Margaret Mullavey. They had 3 sons: Patrick (1858), Edward (1860) and John (1860). Owen later remarried with an Ann in 1871 and had Daniel (1872). Owen is another brother of Bernard.
We would also like to hear from descendants of the other brothers of Bernard, namely: Patrick (1846), Peter (1861), Joseph (1864) and Frank (1869). Note that Peter, Joseph and Frank are the outcome of the second marriage of Patrick (1801) with Mary McGown Mahoney, which happened in 1858, the same year his son Bernard got married!

My great grandmother was Bridget Loughrey born in Northern Ireland about 1858, her father was Bernard probably born about 1820. I have no information on her mother. Bridget was first married in Port Richmond, Pa to John McGlynn and my grandmother was born 1885. I have no idea of what happened to most of the other children of John McGlynn but I do know he died around 1891 and she remarried Hugh Corrigan again in Port Richmond. I am trying to determine if Bernard came to the US. I have found a Bernard in Conschocken, Montgomery County but unable to tell if this is Bridget's father.

After her husbands death, Jane continued to live in Manayunk, on English's Row, until 1875 when she no longer appears in the Phila. city directories. A son Hugh, who from the 1870 Phila. census lived with his mother, does appear at this time in the directories.....until April 10, 1886 when, a Hugh Loughery was buried at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church Cemetery in Manayunk, PA. I have unable to locate a obituary for Hugh, to verify that he is one of my Loughery's. I found a obituary for a Jane Loughery dated 1873, however I have yet to verify that she is the same Jane Loughery I am looking for as she is not buried at St. John's.

Through birth & marriage records, I've been able to trace the spelling of my Loughery line name to Loughrey, that began with John D. Loughery's son, Joseph J. Loughrey.

If you can make a match with any of this, I'd love to hear from you.

I have no names for her parents, or an exact date of birth or last name spelling..... Have tried all of 1900 census for Ga. to find her, and have come up with zero.... Hello all Loghrys!! I am doing family research on my grandmother's side of the family. Wilma Lucille Loghry was born 8/5/1912 at Taylor, Nebraska. She was married to Edward Edgar Howard and had 5 children. Her father was Mark Heber Loghry and he was born 7/26/1872 near Fort Dodge, Iowa. His siblings were John, Walter, Thomas, Jennie, and Minnie. Mark was married to Jessie Mae Roe. At some point, they moved to Nebraska and then on to Wyoming along with 2 of his brothers. Mark's father was Joseph Loghry and he was born 5/10/1847 at New York.
My grandmother would never talk about her past. A year ago, while visiting family grave sites, we came along a few Loghry tombstones and dont know how they are related.

What a surprise. On a lark I typed in the family name and found this website. My grandfather, Frank Loughrey lived in San Francisco and had a son named Ronald Loughrey (he married a woman named Dukey). Shortly after I was born my parents split and when I was 5 my mother gave me to her sister and brother-in-law to be raised. My uncle adopted me and I took his last name. I wonder if there is a family connection through my grandfather?

It's called www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and you can search for old parish records, and also for statutory records. I have found a wealth of information on this website, and I think it would be very useful for someone tracing their roots back to Scotland.

my grandfather's name was joseph loughrey. I never met him--he passed away around 1962-1964 . I did meet my uncle, michael loughrey, in appx 1968 while he lived in a senior citizen center in San Francisco California. He had a thick, irish accent. My grandfather lived in San Francisco. There also was a McMachen family which bought the William(1765) Applegate farm from William in 1812,and the name McMachen seems to have a ring just like the Manown name and the McMachen family owned that land just West of Robert Applegate's farm before John Manown owned the farm West of Robert after 1842.--------------- Maybe McMachen is also Irish? There is a town on the East side of the Ohio River just South of Wheeling named McMachen, for some reason. Who is it today that knows more history than I about Forward Township,I would like to know?--------That is other than William Boucher?

Yes ,William is likely the son of Richard Manown of Manown Road,Forward Township,Allegheny County,Pa.,but is John the son of William,John Manown ,who owned in 1842 ,the land just West of the land which was owned by Robert(1759)Applegatewho in 1842 sold that 100 acres to James Wall ,Jr. --------------Does anyone in the Manown family of today know the history of the names of Sunnyside Hollow Road,Rostosky Ridge Road(which I believe had another name before it was called Rostosky Ridge Road,and Manown Road? Also, I would like to know if you know where the Kerr's of the early 1800's lived ,was it on Sunnyside as I suspect? I have many things to discuss with the serious Manown researcher,inter alia, as I am quite a serious researcher myself,and I have much good info to give you.

Congratulation on the site it is wonderful.
I am amazed how many of my relatives have contacted you. I have been researching my family for years and years. Originally my cousing Tim started it off. Tim in his later years became ill and asked me to take over. I hesitated for a while but eventually I took up the challenge. There were three brother Hugh (convict), Richard and William (my line). Also at least one sister Margaret Loughrey who most likely stayed in Ireland. They came from Buncrana Donegal, Blue Bird Hill Londonderry, Newton and Limvardy. Associated married lines from Ireland are Alcorn, McLachlin, Murdock, Nelson and possible Lough. Their parents were James Loughy a weaver living in Buncrana County Donegal married c1794 a girl named Mary. Hugh had at least two children possibly four being Robert, Maggie and Mary Martha who came to Australia as Richards child. Looking forward to keeping in touch. Best wishes Lois

I am looking for several things now ,more later. I need to know when the Rostosky family came to Rostosky Road, Allegheny County,Forward Township. Pa. as the road seems to be named after their family and they were not in the 1790 census for certain? I also need to know what property boundary by family name will occur at 1438 feet on Rostosky Ridge Road below the Sunnyside Road /Rostosky Ridge(or Williamsport)Roads intersection? I could rephrase the question to say"Does the 1438 feet from the Sunnyside/Williamsport Roads intersection coincide with what was in 1812---1834 the northernmost property line of the Robert (1759) and William,Jr.(1765) Applegate's property? Who owns today the abandoned house and barn at that approximate 1438 feet dimension below the Sunnyside Road intersection? Who owned the Pangburn /Kerr/inter alia cemetary at its origin date which is located just west across the road from what appears to be the 4407 Rostosky Ridge Road property today? Who has any information on Richard Manown who owned the property just north of what was the Robert (1759) Applegate property in 1834 and who has any information on the William Manown who bought the (apparently)7 northern acres of Robert Applegate's property about 1834. Was that 7 acres the original William(1733)Applegate" homestead" ? Was William Manown the son of Richard Manown? Inter alia questions?

Hello there. For the last 10 years I have been looking for information on my great-grandfather, James Loughrey. He was born in Derry in 1876. I don't know his parent's names, or if he had any siblings. He married Anne Boyd and they had a son (my grandfather) before immigrating to Canada sometime around 1905. James died during the war in 1917. Not sure if anyone can help, but it was worth a try. :)

Is anyone related to the John Loughry and Elizabeth Knox Loughry family from Buena Vista, Ohio? I am related to the Loughry family from Tucker Co. WVa and found in the orginial book by Julia Jewitt that she has a member of my Loughry family saying she is related to this John Loughry. So far no link has been found. I recently found a person named Buena Vista Loughry in my Loughry family. Isn't that an odd name for a person? Maybe that is some indication that a relationship between these families exists. Thanks.

Hello-like so many who have commented in he guestbook, it is suprising to see there are so many Loughreys. I have moved around often as a child and we were alwayws the only Loughreys in the phonebooks and of course, no one could ever pronounce our name correctly. My father is Ronald Edward Loughrey and his father was Edward Loughrey. I am 37 and never knew my grandfather. It seems the family came from Ireland via New York, ended up in Pittsburgh where my grandfather married a Schonrank. They moved to DC at some point-and that is all I know. I do know my grandfather is a veteran and is buried in Arlinngton Nat'l Cemetery-did visit the site once upon a time. My 3rd great grandmother was Margaret Catherine Loughry who married John Joseph Cline on the 4 March 1856 in Elkins, WV. I am really happy that I found this site. Maybe someone can help me. Hi, My name is Larry Loughry from Morgantown WV. I like to do seaches on just the name Loughry sometimes and see what comes up. My earliest ancestor to come to this country is Jeremiah Loughry. There is a lot of differnt pronunciations of the name and many different spellings. The history of this issue is a concern for me. Personally I pronounce my name with emphasis on the "gh" as if it sounded like a K if sounded out smoothly. Like Lockery, although I beleive the Irish sounds it more like a strong GH. Whatever it is, I choose to pronounce my name Lockry, but I'd still like to know the exact origin of it. Reply if you like. Larry

My father was Henry Clay Laughrey born 1893; his Parents were William Lester Laughrey born 1866, mother was Fidelia Alice or Alice Fidelia Summers, born 1868. Since last posting in the fall of '99, I have a little more information . . . maybe someone out there will be able to help me trace the ancestors and possible siblings of JAMES LOUGHRY. He was b. abt 1825, possibly in the Fintona area. He was the son of James and Anne Glass Loughry. His father was a hatter. He married Matilda Fleming in Fintona(Church of England & Ireland)12 Nov. 1845 and left for Scotland shortly thereafter . . . where the name was spelled LOURIE, then LAURIE. I have been in contact with many of you but never posted here. My great grandfather Archie was born to Archibald M. and Margarette Clark in Oswego, N.Y. in 1869. Archibald M. was born in Ireland possibly 1830-came to the US via Canada and after a spell in Washington Harbor Wisconsin, came to Oswego. Siblings in Wisc. may have been; Margaret, William, Maryann, John, Thomas, Patrick,or Charles. Archibald M. apparently was a sailor on the Great Lakes. Archie,the youngest, was raised in Oswego by another family and the whereabouts of his family members a mystery besides William who also raised a family in Oswego. London, Ontario Canada had many Loughrey's and could have been a possible stop on the lakes for a sailor. No other leads beside that. Would like any info. to solve these mysterys, Any letters will be answered if I may help others. I may be taking a trip to Ireland this year and would love to meet Loughrey's that are related!

I have been trying to research my g-grandfather's genealogy. James Edward Lockery, His father was Francis Ambrose Lockrey b-1824 in Whitefield, Maine. I have two questions. I have been told that Francis father was James who immigrated from Northern Ireland to Canada (with wife Katherine Johnston) and walked to Whitefield, Maine (because there was a large continent of Irish Catholics there). I have been to the whitefield cemetery and I have found a head stone for a James Loughrey with approx. the right dates for birth and death. Question 1) does it make sense that this Loughrey could have a son that would be called Lockrey? And question 2) I was told that my g-grandfather changed his spelling to Lockery to be more English-like for good employment during this time. I have seen lots of Lockery(s) from Ireland, over the Internet. Could the story I have been told been backwards?

at 67 Perry St. NY in 1903. My grandmother Mary McGranaghan listed her as her cousin and her intended place of residence when she came over to the US. My grandmother was traveling with Catherine and Sarah Loughrey who listed Carrie as their Aunt.

G'day everyone,
I am interested in the derivation of the surname Loughrey. There seems to be at least three possible origins of it's appearance in Ireland.
(1) From Norman adventurers who followed Henry 11 into Ireland. DeLoughrey and DeLouriare said to have arrived in Ireland C.1177. The Normans were the first to introduce the use of surnames.
(2) O'Luachra (or another Gaelic name) formed the beginnings of a clan of indigenous Celts with a phonetically identical surname. The anglicized form (corrupted when committed to the written word) aligned the group with Protestant objectives. Retaining a celtic name suggested you were Catholic and therefore you would be unpopular with the ruling British authorities.
(3) The settlers (colonialists) of Northern Ireland, a mix of Scottish and Northern England immigrants, included a Lochery from the Lanarkshire region of Scotland. This possibility seems to be supported the apparently greater numbers of Loughreys (and variants) in the counties of Ulster up until the latter half of the nineteenth century.
Can anyone provide information which would either support or eliminate one or more of these propositions - or perhaps offer an better theory?

What a great site! I hope you can help me. I will share what I know about my Loughrey relatives.
My mother's mother maiden name was Loughrey. Her
name was Agnes Elizabeth Loughrey. She was one of four children born to Stephen and Anna Loughrey.
Stephen was born in County Cork,Ireland ,in 1866.
He came to the U.S. betwen 1887 and 1890. He married Anna on July 28,1891,in Allegheny County,Pittsburgh,Pa. I have a copy of their marriage record. Anna's maiden name was Kelly.Stephen died on July 22,1929 in Pittsburgh,Pa. I have a copy of his death certificate. He worked as a security guard for the Carnegie Steel Company.
Anna died on October 8,1933. I have a copy of her death certificate and will. Her parents were John Kelly and Bridget Scully. I have located Stephen and Anna in the 1920 Pa. census,living at 220 Fisk St., Pittsburgh,Pa. Also, I found them in the 1910 and 1900 Pa. census.They are buried in the Calvary cemetery,Section H,Lot 42, 718 Hazelwood Ave. Pittsburgh,Pa. I have pictures of their headstones. Stephen's parents are unknown.
I am looking for pictures of Stephen and Anna.
